The two classical shopping streets
known by all Cologne visitors are the "Hohe
Strasse" and the "Schildergasse". The
Hohe Strasse be- gins at Wallrafplatz next to the
cathedral/dom. In 1967, it was Ger- many's first
shopping street only for pedestrians and completely
without traffic. The Hohe Strasse really is a historical
path, because
it has already been existing during the times of
the romans when it was part of the connections
from Rome to Xanten. To- day, many shops with
clothings, shoes and jewelery stand along this
open sky shop- ping mall of more than one
kilometre. The Schildergasse, continuing the
shopping mile Hohe Strasse in the direction to
Neumarkt
Neumarkt, the offerings of the Hohe Strasse are added
by playware for kids and household goods. This street is
a shopping zone, too, but remarkably wider than the Hohe
Strasse. The Schildergasse ends at Neumarkt where on the
right hand the "Zeppelinstrasse" further shops
are awaiting you with offerings on a even higher level,
espa- cially in fashion for women. Along this street the
huge and modern building of the Neumarkt Galerie
shopping centre could be the next visiting point for
those who love to go shopping in Cologne.
The shops along Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse
may be open mondays to saturdays from 10 am to 8 pm.

BREITE STRASSE
AND EHRENSTRASSE The Breite
Strasse and the Ehrenstrasse link the area
around the Dom and Hohe Strasse with the
Hohenzollern- ring. Walking down this connection,
the two nice shopping centers
"WDR-Arkaden" and "Opern
Passagen" as well as some good shops for the
higher demand for delicates- sen, leatherware or
collectors of stamps and coins lie along the way.
The Breite Strasse is extended by Ehren-
strasse which is some- times called the
small version of London's Kings Road because of
some excentric and funny fashion shops.
MITTELSTRASSE
AND PFEILSTRASSE It's not long ago when this quarter around the
Pfeilstrasse was one
of Cologne's red-light disctricts. Today, this and
the neighbouring streets have totally been changed
and they're one of the first places for designer's
fashion now. Boutiques as well as art galleries
have moved into this city quarter. Here and at Friesenwall
some young designers of Cologne's little fashion
scene are met in their own shops. On the Mittelstraße
one finds all the nobel brands for knitweare,
shoes, jewelery or decoration textiles.
ST.
APERNSTR AND AUF DEM BERLICH The St. Apernstrasse is one of the best known
addresses for antiques and arts in Cologne. A lot
of mostly small shops sometimes offer rare objects
to their clients. Lying in a light sandstone house
there is the "Kunstpassage in der
Kreishausgale- rie" (Passage of arts in the
Kreishaus Gallery) with some small galle- ries and
Cologne's branch of Sotheby's. Artistic but not
avail- able is the worth-see- ing Northwest tower
of the old Roman city wall
("Römerturm") stan- ding at the corner
of St. Apernstrasse and Zeughausstrasse.
Shopping centre Neumarkt Galerie
The Neumarkt Galerie is the largest and perhaps the
most beautiful shopping center in the centre of Cologne.
A hallmark of the building is the over 10 meter tall
artwork: an upside down ice cream cone (titled
"Dropped Cone") produced by the American
artists Oldenburg and van Brugge, which is the
building's crown (photo). In the interior is the a
pleasant and friendly shopping environment. The
well-lit
granite floor, which is lit
indirectly by ceiling lighting and in contrast
with the dark wood hand- rails produces a
magnificent effect with the extensive glass and
stainless steel struc- ture. 65 shops are in the
shopping center on three floors. The middle point
of the Neumarkt Galerie is the forum, a round
lighting unit under a large glass copula. All
around the ground level and in the upper
floor are diverse shops with fashionable clothing,
jewelry and shoes from well known names. Karstadt Sport,
the Mayersche book store and Sinn Leffers have their
largest branches there. All toll, the buil- ding has a
selection of several restaurants, bistros and cafes,
above all, in the bottom level where one can sit under
the glass cupola and enjoy a meal. Practical and
comfortable is the subway connection not far from the
Neumarkt Galerie at the Neumarkt stop, next to the
department store Karstadt and the neighboring
Olivandenhof.
Adress: 2 Neumarkt. The
centre is open daily from 7am to 9pm, shops mon to sat
fromt 9.30am to 8pm. More info about the Neumarkt

FRIESENPLATZ
AND RINGE The quarter
around the Friesenplatz is a good shopping destination for house wares and furniture. The modern
furniture trends are at Mathes in the glass palace
"Gerling Karree" on the Hohenzollern-
ring
on three floors. Also a good address for furniture is Möbel Pesch with stores on the
Kaiser-Wilhelm Ring. At Friesenplatz there is, at
Art + Bijou, art prints and framing. Here, the
fashion house, Weingarten, has separate stores for
men's, women's, children's fashion, and for petite
or oversized, as well as for the sporty
type.
DOMKLOSTER
AND WALLRAFPLATZ Those
seeking a present are properly found near the Dom
(cathedral). In the Kristallpassage at
Wallrafplatz there is a sundry made of glass and
porcelain waiting for you. A couple of steps
further is the Prussian King's Berlin Manufacture
of find porcelain. Next to the Früh brewery is
the Stollwerck Passage with toys and fashion. Just
right of the Roman-Germanic Museum is the Kösil Köln-Bücher
book store. And next to the entrance to the
Dom-Hotel is a jewelry shop offering Cartier,
leather goods and silk scarves.
EIGELSTEIN
AND EBERTPLATZ The
"Eigelstein" is the main street of one
of the city's quarters, which is typical for the
simple and basic living in town. Here, about 500
meters from the Dom so many different
nationalities have lived among one another for the
past 40 years. Many shops on the Eigelstein or in
the Weidengasse, where that the best Turkish
restaurants in Cologne are. Also Arabians,
Indians, Italians and Greeks live in this quarter.
On to the Ebertplatz there are several more stores
which offer decorations and antiques as well as a
couple of cafes.
Shopping at the main train station
Where that at one time luggage was stacked up now
serves to re- fresh business travelers and tourists
before and following their trip, meanwhile offering
guests the chance to pick up a souvenir. "Colo-
naden Hauptbahnhof Köln" is a phrase used to
express the micro- shopping center with train
connections. Not only travelers, but also the locals
from Cologne, casually stop by and repose in the five
corridors of the station. 70 shops
environ the halls, among which include specialty
tea and artisan cheese boutiques. Located in one
of the three newspaper stands is a small post
office and, additionally, an office of the
Stadtsparkasse Köln (Cologne Sa- vings Bank) with
an ATM/Cashpoint that
can be found at the Breslauer Platz exit. The middle
passage, the "Markthalle" (bazaar), houses a
number of bistros and small restau- rants where one can
comfortably satiate their hunger with anything from
domestic würstchen and frikadellen over fish,
patế or pizza, to tandori chicken. And, of course,
the Colonaden do not fail to offer cafes, a bakery and a
supermarket. In the remaining passageways one finds, to
name a few, fashionable jewelry, a hair stylist, a drug
store and also a health food store; those desiring new
luggage will find it there too. Another advantage is the
hours of operation of the many businesses, where that,
even some bistros are open 24 hours a day, and for
everything else which one might wish for, the Colona-
den is open every day between 8am and 10pm.

Colonaden im Hauptbahnhof
Where once luggage was
stacked, has been trans- formed into a veritable shopping
center - with train connections. The "Colonaden",
the name of the center, can be found in the middle of
Cologne's main train station, the Hauptbahn- hof. Among
travelers include Cologne natives in the many customers of the
70 shopping points in the three pas- sages, of which there is
not only a large number of restaurants for every taste, but a
baker, a supermarket and three newsstands. Jewelry,
leather goods and clo- thing are also offered.
Additionally there is a pharmacy, a druggist and a health food
store, as well as a hair stylist. Moreover, there is a
branch of the Stadtspar- kasse Köln (Cologne savings bank)
with a cash machine. Interes- ting are the hours of operation
for the many stores, where that some food services are offered
around the clock. And everything else which one needs for
their trip is open in the Colonaden from 8am to 10pm. Adress:

DuMont Carrée
Where once the printing and
publishing house of DuMont Schauberg (ow- ner of the local
news- paper titles "Express" and "Kölner
Stadtan- zeiger") stood, is, since 2001, a new shopping
center with 48 stores on three floors. Bountiful and on the
high-end enter shoppers through the well-lit doorway cas- ting
shadows on the light floor. On two floors there is a market
for electro- nics. Also fashion, jewelry and sweets are not
left out. In the ground floor is a resident super mar- ket (one
large and well sorted for the inner-city), where one can even
leave their goods in a refrigerated box while shopping.
Otherwise in the center, there is, among others, a Chinese
restaurant with self-service, a beautiful espresso bar and an
Italian ice cream parlor in the upper floors. Adress:80-90 Breite Str.
Neumarkt Passage
The Neumarkt Passage offers
around 25 shops that are easy to get to from Neumarkt and through the
side entrance at Richmod- strasse. The entrances have glass
ceilings. An artificial waterfall creates a pleasant
atmosphere, which allows you to enjoy a relaxed shopping ex-
perience of goods from dining ware to porcelain, jewelry and
house wares on to hats and flowers. Of the largest shops in
the building belong the Gonski book store, which has a
relatively large se- lection. Through a door in the Neumarkt
Passage there is a connection
to the large counter hall of the Kreissparkasse, the regional
savings bank of Cologne's suburbs. In the “Future Point”
on the corner of Wolfsstrasse, one can eat, drink and surf the
net. Adress:

Opern Passagen
As the "Ladenstadt"
(City of Shops), the passage was built, in 1964, said to be the first
of its kind in Germany. It was also time to renovate it. The
name for the nice center has also changed to "Opern
Passagen" because of its proximity to the Opera house, which
lies just across the way. The goods offered from the shops
range from clothing and musi- cal instruments to furni- ture and
accessories from the golf. The center was always popular for
art prints, which can now be found in the new building. You
can also admire the gastrono- mical offerings. The "Theater
am Dom" has an entrance here in the passage to the stage
in the underground floor. On the side to Glocken- gasse is the
parent house of 4711 Original Eau de Cologne with the
historic façade and a Glockenspiel on the hour.Adress:

WDR-Arcades
Over the portal hangs a travel
monitor and a speaker, where endless jingles and theme music
from German TV station WDR are played. In the “Mausladen
(mouse shop)” there are figures from the favourite children
series and stuffed animals too. Here, there’s a good jewelry
shop, a fashion store and a bistro. As well as Cologne’s
Central Post Office with 10 counters, which are open until 8pm
during the week and Saturday until 4pm. Underneath, WDR has
built a glass studio, where live reports are given about
Cologne at 5:45pm and 7:30pm. Adress:
